Subject: thinking about jealousy - interesting word

Hi all

Just been meditating the past week on the Hebrew word “qanna”, translated in Greek as “zelos”, yep, one of Jesus’s disciples, called Simon the Zealot in Luke, was translated in Matthew and Mark somewhat confusingly as Simon the Canaanite, but Simon was a Jew of course. Matthew and Mark used the Hebrew word "qanna" and Luke used the Greek word "zelotes" since his intended Greek reader Theophilus was presumably unfamiliar with Hebrew.

But this word “qanna” which is pronounced as “Kan-naw” is the Hebrew word for “Jealousy”, with variations translated as “Envy” and “Zeal”. Associated closely with the Hebrew word "qanah". To quote from Hebrew scholar David Kolinsky in a Quora article "This word QaNa evolved from the word QaNaH which is used to mean to buy or purchase. This does not seem helpful or even connected. But the literally meaning of QaNaH is to fix in place. When a person purchases something, it becomes his, fixed in place. QaNa/ - zealous, jealous literally means fixated on something. Gd is zealous or unrelenting. Gd will not release you, nor abandon you, nor lower his expectations of you or for you. That is what it means."

Here is its famous reference in relation to the Lord

Deuteronomy 4:24

For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

Of course, this is the nature of jealousy, and seen in the Lord, no wonder men tremble at his appearance.

And thus Paul’s words

2 Corinthians 11:2

For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:45

And so it is written (in Genesis 2:7) The first man Adam was made a living soul (cool); the last Adam was made a quickening (life-giving) spirit (fire).

.

Yes, thank you Lord for your Love, your mercy, your Holy Spirit, he knows our frame, and yet my guess is that he “loves us to bits”

Song of Solomon 8:6

Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is rough/hard as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which has a most vehement flame.

Whether it’s the bride talking to the husband, or the husband talking to the bride, the relationship is full-on.

Thank you Lord . Blessings all Steve
