Being Beside Yourself (or nuts) ☺

Hi all

Here’s the context of that 2nd Corinthians 5:13 verse, about being beside yourself or nuts, I’ve popped it in the Bible in Basic English, it’s not really easy to read in some translations:

2 Corinthians 5:4-15

5:4

For truly, we who are in this tent do give out cries of weariness, for the weight of care which is on us; not because we are desiring to be free from the body, but so that we may have our new body, and death may be overcome by life.

5:5

Now he who has made us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a witness of what is to come.

5:6

So, then, we are ever without fear, and though conscious that while we are in the body we are away from the Lord,

5:7

(for we are walking by faith, not by seeing)

5:8

we are without fear, desiring to be free from the body, and to be with the Lord.

5:9

For this reason we make it our purpose, in the body or away from it, to be well-pleasing to him.

5:10

For we all have to come before Christ to be judged; so that every one of us may get his reward for the things done in the body, good or bad.

5:11

Having in mind, then, the fear of the Lord, we put these things before men, but God sees our hearts; and it is my hope that we may seem right in your eyes (your consciences).

5:12

We are not again requesting (reintroducing ourselves for) your approval, but we are giving you the chance of taking pride in (boasting over) us, so that you may be able to give an answer (might have somewhat to give) to those whose glory (boast) is in the face (outward appearance), and not in the heart.

5:13

For if we are foolish (nuts/bewitched/beside ourselves), it is to God; or if we are serious (a safe pair of hands), it is for you.

5:14

For it is the love of Christ which is moving us; because we are of the opinion that if one was put to death for all, then all have undergone death;

5:15

And that he underwent death for all, so that the living might no longer be living to themselves, but to him who underwent death for them and came back from the dead.

And if anyone’d like to check ‘em out, here’s a list of the 17 passages (I think that’s the lot of ‘em) where that “nuts/bewitched/amazed/beside ourselves” word gets used in the New Testament.

1 Matthew 12:23

And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

10 Acts 2:12

11 Acts 8:9

But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:

12 Acts 8:11

And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

13 Acts 8:13

Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

14 Acts 9:21

But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?

15 Acts 10:45

And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

16 Acts 12:16

But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

17 2 Corinthians 5:13

For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause.
