Subject: Fire in me - interesting phrase

Hi all

Just been meditating on Jesus’s words in Mark 9:49: “Every person will be salted with fire”. No, doesn’t sound very attractive, does it ? :-)

He then goes on to say “have salt in yourselves, and be at peace (flow) with one another.” So the fire, the fiery trials, which are necessary for us all, will bring out the salt in us ‘cause that’s what remains in us after fire’s done its work. Happens literally, and happens spiritually as well.

Mind you, when it says in Hebrews “He makes his ministers flaming fires”, I’m very conscious of the Lord’s prayer as well “Lead us not into the place of stress (i.e. temptation), but deliver us from evil”. Asking for the “fire to burn in me”, as a number of chorusus go, sounds somewhat heavy, the older we get. Especially when we look at Job, and the Lord’s discussions with Satan. ;-)

It’s perhaps better to pray “search us oh God and know our hearts, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead us in the way everlasting”. This is what Paul means about “judging ourselves”, responding to the Lord’s talking to us and guiding us.

In fact I checked out the phrase “fire in me” in scripture. It’s not there as a phrase, there are 13 verses that have those three words in them, and most of them are said pretty destructively. Particularly that fifth one.

The verses are below for those interested, interesting that Tommy Barnett preached on the sixth one (Judges 9) on Sunday, yes, may the Lord have mercy on us all.

Blessings all Steve
