Intro - Male and Female

Male in Hebrew is a word zakar meaning "marked" or "remembered". Heaven, evening and morning and day and night, light (as a luminous body) and darkness, months and stars, angels and Adam and the host, the word "The" ("El"), the word "word", the voice, the writings and the prophets, the water and the blood ("dam"), the head and the heart (centre), the book or letter ("cepher") and death. Objective data.

Female in Hebrew neqebah comes from naqab ("Drawn forth" or "Expressed"). Subjective issues, words like Spirit (wind, cool), truth, earth ("erets"), ground ("adamah"), names of countries and cities and body parts, "nephesh" (breath or soul) from a verb "naphash" (to be refreshed) and "naphach" (to breathe), body, sheol (hell) from a verb "sha-al" (to ask for & require in full), torah (the law) from a verb "yara" (to teach), your book (Psalm 56:8) ("ciphrah"), years (cycles). Nouns that are drawn out from objective facts or verbs. A process. Not so simple to define quickly.

Note that frequently in Hebrew a masculine noun is made feminine by adding the letter ה (he) — "a" as in Ishshah (woman) from Iysh (man). Another suffix is ת (tav) — "t". But this is by no means universal.

Note, when speaking a number without an implied noun (e.g. when counting, or providing a modern telephone number) the feminine form is used.

Note too, Hebrew numbers and years were always written out as **full words from ancient times. The use of Hebrew numerals, especially in numbered lists (similar to A, B, C, etc., in English) is thought to be due to Greek influence in the second century BC.

** One exception to writing whole words instead of letters for numbers in the Greek New Testament is that famous passage in Rev 13:16-18 "he makes everyone be given a mark in their right hand or on their forehead and that no one have the power to buy or sell except the one having the mark or the name of the (wild) beast or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that has understanding count the number of the (wild) beast for it is the number of a man and his number 666". The earliest manuscripts used Greek letters as numerals: χ ξ ϛ pronounced khee, ksee, stigma, three marks or "x" sounds, and as we say it in English: six hundred sixty six. Declared to be the Emperor Nero in many, early writings.
