Released in 1984, it was revived in 1991 by John Cale in a tribute album. He used slightly modified lyrics, created from the original 80 verses or so that Leonard sent when John Cale asked for the correct lyrics. In 2001, Cale's version was played in the movie "Shrek". However it was Rufus Wainwright an artist signed with Dreamworks whose version appears on the movie's soundtrack album.

It has been covered since, literally hundreds of times. In early 2012, while promoting his then-current album, Old Ideas, Cohen stated he wasn't tired of the song being covered: "There's been a couple of times when other people have said can we have a moratorium please on "Hallelujah"? Must we have it at the end of every single drama and every single Idol? And once or twice I've felt maybe I should lend my voice to silencing it but on second thought no, I'm very happy that it's being sung."
