Previously the birr was at par with the Thaler (trade dollar) or 4 shillings and tuppence. Many held on to their old birr notes during the occupation, as the value of the lira dropped considerably. In 1941, the British exchanged the Italian currency at 24 Italian lira to the East African shilling. The birr was subsequently devalued to be equal to 2 shillings, or 2½ to the US Dollar. In 1931, the Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I, formally requested that the international community use the name Ethiopia instead of Abyssinia, and the issuing Bank of Abyssinia also became the Bank of Ethiopia. In 1855 the Maria Theresa Austrian thaler was adopted as the official coin. The Indian rupee (worth 2 English shillings) and the Spanish Mexican dollar were also used in foreign trade. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Maria Theresa Austrian thalers (called "birr" meaning "silver") and blocks of salt called "amole tchew" served as currency in Ethiopia.
