The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Colossian

Chapter 1

Who (his dear son) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn (heir) of all creation:

For by him were all things created that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions (masters), or principalities (chiefs), or powers (authorities): all things were created by him, and for him:

And he is before all things, and by him all things consist

And he is the head of the body, the church: (he) who is the beginning (chief), the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence (first place).

The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Colossians

Chapter 2

As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk you in him:

Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Beware lest any man spoil (seduce) you through philosophy and empty delusion, after the tradition of men, after the principles (structures) of the world, and not after Christ.

For in him dwells all the fulness (completion) of the Godhead bodily.

And you are complete in him, which is the head of all principality (chief) and power (authority):

In whom also you are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

Buried with him in baptism, wherein also you are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who has raised him from the dead.

And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, has he quickened (made alive) together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses (offences);

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances (decrees) that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

And having spoiled (unclothed) principalities (chiefs) and powers (authorities), he made a show of them openly , triumphing (making a noisy procession) over them in it.

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a holy-day, or of the new moon (month), or of the sabbath (rest) days:

Which are a shadow of things to come but the body is of Christ.

Let no man beguile (defraud) you of your reward in a voluntary (self-chosen) humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly (idly) puffed up by his fleshly mind (nous/knowledge),

And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands (ligaments) having nourishment ministered and knit together increases with the increase of God.

Therefore if you be dead with Christ from the principles (structures) of the world, why, as though living in the world, are you subject to ordinances (decrees)

(Touch not; taste not; handle not;

Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments (injunctions) and doctrines (teachings) of men ?

Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in self-chosen ceremony (religion) and humility, and unsparing of the body; it's not of any value against your increasing (filling up) your flesh (which is passing away).

Subject: Chatting this morning about Apollos

Hi all

Romans 1:28 And even as they did not approve or see any value in their having God in their knowledge , God gave them over to an unapproved i.e. having a low value, reprobate mind , doing things which just don't connect or fit.

And from there, we goto a man who was very desirous of having God in his knowledge. Here are those ten verses to that chap Apollos:

1 Acts 18:24

And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.

Yep, this is a great passage, Apollos knew the scriptures, he was a fervent Greek Jew (on fire), he knew the baptism of John, i.e. he knew about repentance, of having a changed mindset which meant dying to self and living for the Father. But like Cornelius, and like the disciples in Acts 19:1 below, he had not yet met the Lord Jesus and thus knew nothing yet of having that daily walk through the power, the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Which those wonderful disciples, Aquila and Priscilla undoubtedly helped him with: "expounded to him the way of God more perfectly".

2 Acts 19:1-2

And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, he said to them, Have you received (taken hold of) the Holy Spirit since you believed? And they said to him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Spirit.

3 1 Corinthians 1:12

Now this I say, that every one of you says, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

4 1 Corinthians 3:4

For while one says, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are you not carnal (i.e. thinking only about the "here and now")?

5 1 Corinthians 3:5

Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom you believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?

6 1 Corinthians 3:6

I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

7 1 Corinthians 3:22

Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours;

8 1 Corinthians 4:6

And these things, brothers and sisters, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that you might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.

9 1 Corinthians 16:12

As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come to you with the brothers: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he will come when he shall have convenient time.

10 Titus 3:13

Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting to them.

Blessings all Steve
