Genealogy Abraham to Christ

His Royal Lineage

Matthew 1: 1-17

The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Abraham, Father of Israel — the promised nation

  1. Abraham
  2. Isaac
  3. Jacob
  4. Judah and his brothers
  5. Pharez and Zerah of Tamar
  6. Hezron
  7. Aram
  8. Amminadab
  9. Nahshon
  10. Salmon
  11. Boaz of Rahab — Boaz marries Ruth, a Moabitess, tenth generation from Abraham and his brother-in-law/nephew Lot who had fathered Moab unknowingly through his daughter. Note the prohibition in Deuteronomy 23:2
  12. Obed of Ruth
  13. Jesse
  14. David the king

Solomon, King of Israel — the visible nation

  15. Solomon of her who had been the wife of Uriah — Bathsheba's name is not mentioned here
  16. Rehoboam
  17. Abijah
  18. Asa
  19. Jehoshaphat
  20. Jehoram, whom Jehoshaphat causes to marry Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel — his son Ahaziah, grandson Joash and great-grandson Amaziah apparently have ungodly ends and are neither mentioned nor counted in this genealogy
  21. Uzziah
  22. Jotham
  23. Ahaz
  24. Hezekiah
  25. Manasseh
  26. Amon
  27. Josiah
  28. Jehoiachin — strictly speaking he was Josiah's grandson, but Josiah's son Jehoiakim is not mentioned — it was the time of the kingdom of Babylon — Jehoiakim's younger brother Jehoahaz who took the throne initially died in captivity in Egypt — Jehoiakim died in Jerusalem — then Jehoiakim's son Jehoiachin and his brothers are taken prisoners into Babylon

And after the Jews were brought to Babylon we thus see

Jehoiachin, King of Israel (in captivity but also renewed, born again) — the somewhat invisible nation

  29. Jehoiachin — with renewal coming at the end of the 37th year of his captivity — see 2 Kings 25: 27-30
  30. Shealtiel
  31. Zerubbabel
  32. Abiud
  33. Eliakim
  34. Azor
  35. Sadoc
  36. Achim
  37. Eliud
  38. Eleazar
  39. Matthan
  40. Jacob
  41. Joseph the (betrothed) husband of Mary
  42. Jesus, who is called Christ.

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations
